Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook addressed MIT 2018 Commencement.
Sheryl Sandberg addressed the Class of 2018 at MIT. Her speech focused on a range of topics from the workplace culture to changes to Facebook to the role of technology in society. It is the last point that seemed to resonate with many audience members.
She conveyed the role of technology in advancing society commenting on the progress of the last 70 years outpacing all of humanity’s progress in generations prior. For Sandberg, working in the technology industry was not the direction she had planned. Her first job after college took her to work with patients in India.
Yet, Sandberg encouraged the audience to work in the technology industry regardless of educational and other backgrounds. And Sandberg stressed the need to use technology for the good of people.
It is not the technology that you build that will define you, it is the teams you build and what people do with it that will define you. Technologists always are optimists. We have to be optimists. If you want to do something that hasn’t been done before so many people will tell you it can’t be done.
Our challenge now is to be clear-eyed optimists.
Sandberg also encouraged all members of teams to stand for their values commenting “even if you’re the most junior person in the room, you have power. Use it. And use it well.”
